SPC Hybrid Flooring Problems? How to Fix Damage and Stop Gaps & Broken Locks for Good⚠️

🕒 3 min read

SPC hybrid flooring has surged in popularity thanks to its waterproof features, real-wood aesthetics, and easy upkeep. But increasingly, we see homeowners face a common challenge: thin or cheaply made SPC hybrid flooring that leads to broken locking systems and unsightly gaps.

Given that flooring typically stays put for 10–15 years, it’s essential to get it right the first time. Here’s how to handle damaged SPC hybrid flooring and some practical tips to avoid these issues altogether.

1. Identify the Root Cause When planks shift or gaps appear, here's what's likely happening:

  • Weak locks: Thin or budget SPC flooring often has fragile locking systems that break under pressure or slight subfloor unevenness.
  • Installation errors: Overly tight kickboards or inadequate expansion gaps can cause flooring to buckle, peak, or pop.
  • Subfloor preparation: Neglected subfloor prep puts extra stress on SPC planks, accelerating lock failure.

2. Properly Replace Damaged Planks If you notice broken locking profiles or visibly damaged planks, here's the best approach:

  • Remove skirting boards or beading around the damaged plank.
  • Gently unclip and remove planks until reaching the damaged piece.
  • Replace with a plank identical in size, color, and locking profile.
  • Reinstall the removed planks carefully and reattach skirting or beading.

Avoid quick fixes like glue! they won’t last and will ultimately fail again. Proper replacement ensures long-term reliability.

3. Prevent Future Issues Proactively preventing damage saves significant hassle. Follow these tips:

  • Invest in high-quality SPC flooring: Choose robust products like our Deko Natural range, which features an 8.5mm thick, carbon-infused core resistant to breaking and thermal expansion issues.
  • Proper subfloor preparation: Use flooring designed for subfloor variations, such as Deko Extreme Flex, capable of handling up to 8mm height differences, minimizing lock stress.
  • Allow for expansion gaps: Maintain an 8–10mm gap between flooring and fixed elements like walls or kitchen cabinetry, enabling natural expansion and preventing buckling or gaps.
  • Keep spare flooring: Store at least one or two extra boxes for future repairs, as product lines and locking mechanisms may change over time.
  • Consider hassle factors: Remember, replacing damaged planks may involve moving heavy furniture and appliances. Investing in durable flooring now prevents significant disruptions later.

💡 Final Tip
Most SPC flooring issues stem from thin, low quality products, poor installation, or inadequate subfloor prep. Investing upfront in quality flooring and professional installation can save substantial costs and headaches later.

Can I just glue broken SPC locks instead of replacing planks?

No. Glue is only a temporary fix. It won’t restore the strength of the locking system. The best solution is to replace the damaged plank.

Do I really need expansion gaps with SPC flooring?

Yes! All floating floors need 8–10mm gaps along walls, kickboards, and fixed furniture. Without them, the floor can peak, gap, or pop.

Can SPC be installed over uneven subfloors?

Slight variations are okay, but big dips or humps can break the locks. Our Deko Extreme Flex can handle up to 8mm variation over 3 meters but if your floor is worse than that, leveling is needed.

What if I can’t find matching planks later?

Always keep 1–2 extra boxes of your flooring! Colors or locking profiles can be discontinued or changed, and without spares, you may have to redo the whole area.

What causes SPC locks to break?

Common causes include poor subfloor prep, lack of expansion gaps, installing over soft underlay, or using cheap/thin SPC planks with weak locking systems.

How do I replace a damaged SPC plank in the middle of the room?

You’ll need to carefully unclip planks from the nearest wall until you reach the damaged one. Replace it, then reinstall the planks in order and reattach the skirting or trim. Avoid shortcuts like cutting out the center plank.

Can SPC flooring be repaired if it starts gapping or lifting?

Minor gaps may be fixed by removing and reinstalling planks. If the issue is caused by subfloor problems or missing expansion gaps, those need to be fixed first otherwise the issue will return.
